Polystyrene
Product Description
Polystyrene (PS) is a thermoplastic polymer made from the monomer styrene, with the chemical formula (C8H8)n. It typically appears as a clear, glass-like material in its general-purpose form, but can also be colored with pigments. Polystyrene has a density of approximately 1.04-1.06 g/cm³, making it lightweight. It has a glass transition temperature of around 100°C (212°F), which allows it to become soft and moldable at this temperature. PS is known for its rigidity and brittleness, with a tensile strength of around 30-60 MPa. It offers good optical clarity and can be modified to improve impact resistance in its high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) form.
Applications of Polystyrene (PS):
Packaging: Polystyrene is widely used in packaging due to its light weight, rigidity, and ease of molding. It is used for disposable cups, plates, cutlery, food containers, and protective packaging materials like foam peanuts and cushioning for electronics.
Consumer Products: PS is found in various consumer goods, including disposable razors, plastic models, CD and DVD cases, and household items like plastic utensils and storage containers. Its low cost and ease of production make it ideal for mass-produced items.
Construction Materials: Expanded polystyrene (EPS), commonly known as Styrofoam, is used in construction for insulation panels, decorative architectural elements, and lightweight concrete applications. Its insulating properties and structural support make it valuable in building construction.
Medical Applications: Polystyrene is used in medical products such as petri dishes, test tubes, and other laboratory equipment. Its clarity, ease of sterilization, and chemical resistance are advantageous in medical and laboratory settings.
Electronics: In the electronics industry, polystyrene is used for housing and insulating components due to its electrical insulating properties and ease of fabrication. It is commonly found in products like TV housings, computer casings, and other electronic devices.
Toys and Recreational Items: Polystyrene is used in the production of toys and recreational items
